Alliance Housing Celebrates Black History Month

Alliance Housing hosted a Black History Celebration in February to celebrate the many achievements of the African American community.

Tenants encouraged site-wide participation. Their message was loud and clear: It doesn't matter your race, or what you think you can do, it's about participating. What do you like to do and what can you do?

The celebration was completely tenant-driven. Tenants wrote the scripts and choreographed dances, and designed the costumes for a skit. The Mill City Choir performed and tenants prepared soul food to feed attendees. Tenants organized practice schedules, called others to remind them, and encouraged each other: “You can't back out now. Let’s do this.”

The celebration serves as a stellar example of what Alliance tenants can achieve when encouraged and given the opportunity to use their many gifts and talents. More than 80 family members and friends attended the evening performance.

The directors of this event hope to create this again. We can't wait to see what grows out of the positive energy this event created.
